From Roman
times to the present, VIENNA Vienna, has played a
vital role in European history. The Austrian capital is
a compact city with many of the important attractions, especially
those that date from the Hapsburg era located near Vienna's
central district known as the Innere Stadt.
On the southwest side of the Innere Stadt is the Hofburg
which was the former imperial palace and seat of the Habsburgs.
Today it houses several museums, including the Schatzkammer,
home to the crown jewels. Nearby is is the Stephansdom,
Vienna's magnificent Gothic structure which stands at the
district's centre.
