UTRECHT
with its characteristic sunken canals and brick cellar warehouses
that have been converted into chic cafés and restaurants
is one of the country's most charming cities. The Domkerk,
Utrecht's cathedral was begun in 1245 and today some parts
of it remains. The Domtoren, which has always sood
apart from the cathedral is one of the tallest towers in
the Netherlands. The Catharijne Convent Museum has
a wonderful collection of paintings and manuscripts from
the ninth century on, including works by Geertgen tot Sint
Jans, Rembrandt, Hals and most notably a beautiful Virgin
and Child by Van Cleve.
