TRIESTE was captured by the Romans in 178 BC and
signs of their occupancy can be seen in the theatre off
Corso Italia and the arch by Piazza Barbacan. The most
interesting buildings date from the Habsburg era, the
most beautiful being Miramare Castle which is set
amid lush, nicely landscaped gardens, over-looking the
sea. The primary museum is the Revoltella which
houses a nice collection of nineteenth century elegant
and stately home furnishings and Triestine paintings.
The nearby Museo Sartorio whose featured highlight
is the Santa Chiara triptych, is well worth a visit.
