TOLEDO is located at the western end of Lake Erie
on the banks of the Maumee River and the shores of Maumee
Bay. In 1888, Edward Libbey founded the Libbey glass company
here. The city is one of the most significant ports of
the Great Lakes. Connected with the St. Lawrence Seaway,
its port is one of the world's largest for bituminous
coal shipment. The city is also the home of the University
of Toledo. The famous Toledo Museum of Art
is housed in a marble Neo-Classical building on the historic
Old West End. The museum features one of the world's largest
collections of ornamental glass.
