At its heart of SACRAMENTO sits the Capitol, located
in a large landscaped garden, filled with flowers and
statuary. Designed in 1860 in a grand Renaissance Revival
style, the structure houses the office of the governor
and the state senate chambers and serves as a museum of
the state's cultural and political history. Most of the
wharves, warehouses and building along the historic riverfront
have been revitalized or converted into trendy shops and
restaurants. The California State Railroad Museum
houses some wonderfully restored locomotives. Sutter's
Fort State Historic Park, located east of town, re-creates
Sacramento's original settlement from 1839.
