PROVIDENCE
began as a farming community, founded by the clergyman Roger
Williams, who was driven from the Massachusetts Bay colony
for his beliefs on religious freedom. Located east of town
is Brown University and several historic areas, including
Benefit Street's Mile of History. The street is lined
with more than 100 houses ranging in style from Colonial
and Federal to Greek Revival and Victorian which house various
libraries and museums that chronicle our country's history
and house several comprehensive collections of art. A short
distance to the north is the First Baptist Church in
America (1774-75).
