OKLAHOMA CITY was created in a matter of hours on April 22, 1889, as part of the first Oklahoma Territory land rush. The city was created out of thin air on the barren prairie as more than 10,000 filed land claims. In 1928 oil was discovered and the city saw its first oil strike with an active well located on the grounds of the Oklahoma State Capitol. Besides its wonderful museums, the Oklahoma State Museum of History and the National Cowboy Museum, the city is sadly, most visited today by thousands of people to view the Oklahoma City National Memorial and reflecting pool that pays homage to the lives lost in the tragic 1995 Federal Building bombing incident.
