| The frenzied
yet spectacular city of NAPLES sprawls by a bay in
the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The area between Piazza Garibaldi
and Via Toledo, roughly above the old Roman Neapolis (still
largely unexcavated below the ground), makes up the old
part of the city. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale
holds treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The nearby
church of San Giovanni a Carbonara houses somestunning
medieval work of art. Central Naples is certainly rich in
14th and 15th century churches. San Domemico Maggiore
contain some excellent Renaissance sculpture while Santa
Chiara is the home of tombs of the Angevin monarchs. |
