Home to Texas Tech University, LUBBOCK is perhaps best known for its rock 'n roll musical native son, Buddy Holly. Local musicians that are honored in the Buddy Holly Center include Roy Orbison, Joe Ely, Waylon Jennings and Tanya Tucker. More history is chronicled in the University's Ranching Heritage Center, an outdoor display with over thirty original ranch buildings, including small cowboy huts to large overseers' houses, set in a harsh landscape spiked with cactuses and mesquite. The adjacent Texas Tech Museum has further Southwestern displays and Buddy Holly memorabilia.
