City, Capital of the Shannon Region, has a colorful and
fascinating history with castles, ancient walls and museums
revealing its historic past. The best views of the city
are to be had walking along the banks of the Shannon River,
especially around Arthur's Quay and the City Hall,
or alternatively from the top of King John's Castle.
Also of interest is the Lough Gur Stone Age Centre,
thought to be the most important Stone Age site in Ireland.
Although virtually all the sights are in the old parts of
Englishtown and Irishtown, the modern center of the city
is Newtown Pery - where the shops, lively pubs and
restaurants are located. |
