LAREDO is located on the northern banks of the
Rio Grande (Rio Bravo) and is a major point of entry into
Mexico. The city center has been restored with cobbled
streets and Victorian buildings around the San Augustin
Plaza. The small Republic of the Rio Grande Museum
displays the city's role under the six different national
flags. It is but a short walk across the bridge from the
plaza to the little Mexican border town of Nuevo Laredo.
Most visitors crossing are simply going for evening meals
and weekend shopping. This is a lively place, with most
of the tourist shops and restaurants located near the
bridge.
