| HELENA,
known as Last Chance Gulch was founded as a gold mining
camp in the mid 1800's. Many of the "lucky" prospectors
remained here with their millions, and their many of their
mansions still adorn the west side of town. Other have been
converted to Bed and Breakfast Inns. Inside the massive
copper domed Montana State Capitol are huge murals
by Charles Russell showing scenes from Montana's history.
More of his work can be viewed at the Montana Historical
Society Museum, in addition to early photographs of
Montana pioneer life. Also of note is the Holter Museum
of Art which houses painting, sculpture, photography
and ceramics. |
