FREIBERG
is located in the eastern part of Germany south of the capital
Berlin, close to the border of the Czech Republic. It is
rather small, but is famous as a traditional silver mining
district and today as an important geocenter in Europe.
The town was founded in 1186 when rich silver deposits were
discovered. In the Middle Ages, Freiberg became a very wealthy
town, and many splendid buildings from this period survived
until today, including portions of the old town wall and
Renaissance and Baroque buildings in the Upper Market
Square. The most famous is the St. Marien cathedral
with its 12th century Romanesque Golden Portal, the Tulip
Pulpit and the Silbermann organ.
