Much of FRANKFURT AM MAIN, including almost all
of the city centre, was demolished during World War II.
Instead of restoring the city's previous buildings, builders
decided to build anew. For that reason, the skyline looks
more like New York than the Federal Republic. The skyscraper
district is indeed nicknamed "Mainhattan". It
is also not surprising with their forward thinking attitute
that the headquarters of major banks and newspapers are
located here. But, Frankfurt is rich in culture. The Städelsches
Kunstinstitut occupies a Neo-Renaissance building
on the "museum embankment" housing a fine collection
of Dutch and German print and drawings and Old Masters
such as Botticelli, van Eyck, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
