| Damaged by
an earthquake in 1755, not much remains of FARO's ancient
city. Most of the existing buildings date from the 18th
and 19th centuries. The old city is walkable and ca be explored
easily by foot. In the heart of the city is the Largo da
Sé, beside the 18th century bishops palace, Paço
Episcopal. Next to it is the Museu Arqueológico
which houses local Roman and manueline archeological artifacts.
One of the most interesting sites is the Igreja do Carmo
with it stunning facade and ornate interior located in harby
Largo do Carmo. To the right of the altar leads to
a goulish Capela dos Ossos, Chapel of Bones, its
walls adorned with bones disinterred from the adjacent cemetery.
