FAIRBANKS is at the end of the Alaska Highway from Canada and is surrounded on the north by sub-artic wilderness. The long hours of darkness in winter make it an ideal location to view the northern lights. The city suffers extreme temperatures; often the high temperature in summer is above 90 degrees F, dipping to below -60 degrees F in winter.
