| DRESDEN, once
one of Germany's most beautiful cities was known throughout Europe for its superb
art and architecture. In 1945, Allied bombers nearly destroyed the city during
a vast bombing raid. Restoration continues today. Quite famous is the Zwinger,
an Baroque structure that is ringed by galleries including the Gemäldegalerie
Alte Meister. This gallery houses a fine collection of paintings including
works by Rembrandt, van Eyck, Velázquez, Raphael, Titian, Vermeer and Dürer.
Other sites of interest are the Sächsische Staatsoper, the Hofkirche
and the Residenzschloss which was built in stages over two centuries. |
