| During the 10th century,
CÓRDOBA enjoyed a golden age as the western capital of the Islamic
empire. It is from this era that the majestic Moorish monument of the Mezquita
decends. It stands right in the centre of the city with over 850 columns of granite,
jasper and marble creating a stunning effect. To the west of the Mezquita, is
the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, a 14th century palace and fortress
built by Alfonso XI. Nearby, is the Museo Taurino which is a bullfighting
museum with a replica of the tomb of Manolete a famous matador. In the newer part
of the city is the Museo Arqueológico and Museo de Bellas Arts. |
