COLUMBIA, the
state capital, is rich in colonial history. Although General Sherman destroyed
much of the city in 1786, the State House survived. Six bronze stars denote
places where Union cannon balls hit the copper domed edifice. Informative exhibits
can be viewed at the South Carolina State Museum located on the banks of
the Congaree River. Beside it is the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room
and Museum which houses a large collection of military artifacts dating from
the Civil War era. A short distance south of the city will bring you to the Congaree
Swamp National Museum. | | | | |
